How many times have a number of us been in the audience or testifying before the Montgomery County Planning Board? Many more have written to the Chair and the Board to ask for their attention to an issue of importance. For those that have even a single experience with this appointed body, you are fully aware that the Planning Board and the Board Chair make land use and policy decisions that have significant impact on our communities. The County Council will be interviewing 5 candidates (out of a pool of 19 applications) in July. This is not an election but rather an appointment and, therefore, the public can and should weigh in as to their thoughts about which candidate (s) are best and why. Keep in mind that the position being filled is the Chair but if it is filled by an existing Board member then the Council will be appointing someone to fill the Board seat of the new chair - get it?
MCA is spearheading an effort to ensure that the process is more easily open to the public and facilitating coordinated communication with the Council. We believe that filling the Planning Board Chair position deserves wide attention and careful scrutiny. Fortunately, the applicants are somewhat tried and tested and have historic and public records that should help folks as they determine which of them is best suited to this important position.
