2016 Royce Hanson Award: We Celebrate Anne and Jay Cinque

9/6/2016

Join us October 23 at Black Hill Regional Park  in Boyds to honor Anne and Jay! RSVP

Each year MCA presents the Royce Hanson Award in recognition of outstanding commitment toward the protection of Montgomery County’s Agricultural Reserve. The award is named after its first recipient, Dr. Royce Hanson, former Chair of the Montgomery County Planning Commission and original architect of the Ag Reserve.

This year we are pleased to honor Anne and Jay Cinque who have been active on issues in their own area of Boyds and lead Reserve residents in protecting local resources as part of Sugarloaf Citizens Association and Sugarloaf Land Conservancy.  More about Anne and Jay here.

Please plan on joining us on Sunday October 23 at Black Hill Regional Park for food, music by The 19th Street Band (voted best local band by Bethesda Magazine), and a celebration of the Cinques and the Ag Reserve they cherish.

This event is free- but please consider becoming a member or renewing your MCA membership when you RSVP below- Thanks!

Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Act - Oh, it's the law

4/8/2016

by Caroline Taylor
On April 4, 2016 Governor Hogan signed the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Act, which requires Maryland to reduce statewide gas emissions by 40 percent from 2006 levels by 2030. This bipartisan legislation, which was supported by the Maryland Departments of the Environment, Agriculture, and Natural Resources, is based on a recommendation of the Maryland Commission on Climate Change and enhances the 2009 Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Act. This law is expected to help create and maintain tens of thousands of jobs and represents a balanced, science-based approach to reduce carbon pollution.

Community Food Rescue! Reserve Farmers Step Up!

5/26/2015

by Caroline Taylor
Picture
MCA has joined the Community Food Rescue team. Community Food Rescue is a new initiative to develop a coordinated food recovery system throughout Montgomery County, Maryland. This system enhances the good work of businesses, agencies, and organizations that already recover perfectly good food before it is thrown away.

Update: Great blog profiling early participant Amanda Cather from Plow and Stars Farm (recruited by MCA!)

From the website:

Every year in Montgomery County, Maryland…
  • 246,000 tons (23%) of the County’s solid waste is food waste. (Montgomery County Waste Composition Study, July 26, 2013)
  • 79,000-81,000 (8%) of Montgomery County residents do not know where their next meal will come from. (Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap study)
  • 35% of children in Montgomery County public schools qualify for free or reduced meals. (Montgomery County Public Schools)

MCA is doing our part by linking farms, Reserve food business and service for those in need to the program. Spread the word... because we need to stop the waste and rescue food.

MCA is proud to announce that we have been recognized for a third time as one of the best small charities in the D.C. region by Catalogue for Philanthropy: Greater Washington. A panel of 110 expert reviewers from area foundations, corporate giving programs, and peer non-profit organizations evaluated 270 applications.

MCA is known as an effective and innovative non-profit whose efforts to preserve and promote Montgomery County’s nationally recognized 93,000 acre Ag Reserve have brought increased public and governmental support of local food production and farmland and open space preservation. Most importantly, MCA’s efforts are putting more farmers on the ground and keeping them there.
