MCA seeks to provide resources to those who are unfamiliar with Well and Septic Systems as it is a very different situation from being on municipal sewer and water systems. Across the country, 1 in 5 homes is on a septic system. Each property is basically its own water and sewer utility - with the responsibilities that come with that independence. Proactive care of these systems will give each property owner many years of service free of trouble. Timely maintenance of these systems is good for the environment, our shared water supply and saves money.
What is a Well?
If you are thinking of a small pile of rocks with a string and bucket - you are not even close. A well is an impervious tube, usually around 6in in diameter that reaches down to the groundwater aquifer. This tube is attached to a pump that pumps the water to the home or business it is attached to. The Groundwater flows in to replace what is pumped out, however this depends on groundwater levels subject to other demands (i.e too much development that draws on the aquifer) or droughts. Wells can also be impacted by contamination from nearby spills. It is important you keep your well well by testing it at least once a year. |
What is a Septic System?
Why Sewer And Septic? Why not just extend sewer and water service to all of the County?
Extending sewer and water lines for long distances is not cost effective. Already strained sewer lines also would not be able to handle the increased demand.
