by Kristina Bostick
Our Land Link program has achieved another match! We started Land Link to overcome what local farmers identified as the biggest hurdle to starting or expanding local farms- the astronomical cost of land- as explained by Woody Woodroof from Red Wiggler Community Farm in our "Growing Legacy" Film.

Click here to see our Land Link site and sign up to find or offer land for lease.

USDA has recently awarded grants aimed at studies/initiatives that will address the impact of climate change on domestic agriculture production. In the D.C. metro region we have been advised by the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin that our water resources will be diminished on annual average by 35% by the year 2040.

Drought in CA Drives Up Food Costs- Time for Local Food!

4/17/2014

by Kristina Bostick
Wildfires, Drought, whatever inane summer blockbusters coming soon to our theaters- the news from California has not been good. But in all seriousness, some fear that the droughts in the state that grows most of our country's food are more of a "new normal" than just a bad spring.

Online Resources for Ag Leases

4/8/2014

by Kristina Bostick

We started our Lind Link program in response to the number one challenge facing new and expanding farmers- finding reasonably priced land.

Once you've found your farmer or landowner, you might think the hard part is over, but a successful land match depends on putting agreements in writing.

We've found a few great online resources for Farmers and Landowners:
Ag Lease 101
Drake University Ag Law Center
Visit our Land Link page to see other resources and check out the land and farmers looking to link in MoCo and beyond.

MCA's Education Program

3/14/2014

by Kristina Bostick
A smile flashes over MCA Education Committee Chair Gene Kingbury's face as their hands go up.  The students at Poolesville High School have been listening as Gene explained how his family's fifth generation orchard grows (over 6000 trees!) and innovates.  "How did you develop your new peach variety and do you patent it?" "Can you grow your fruit without chemicals?" Greg Glenn of Rocklands Farm offers a lesson in best practices in livestock raising by bunching students between desks with little room to move about.  Huddled together and getting hot and uncomfortable, they get the picture... quickly

CSA v. Farmers Market- How do Farmers Choose a Profit Model?

3/4/2014

by Kristina Bostick
Picture
We are really enjoying the articles from a new online and hard copy publication called Modern Farmer. There have been a number of recent articles profiling the different ways that farmers structure their businesses. With spring on the way (we promise!) here are some thoughts from the other side of the table or CSA box.

Farmers Market Confidential - the owner of a horse-driven farm describes all the pros and cons of his time spent behind the table at farmers markets.

The State of the CSA- an early adopter of the CSA model describes how things have changed over 20+ years.

However your farmer decides to sell- you can find MoCo's best local food from CSA's here and at one of MoCo's vibrant Farmers Markets here.

Farmers and farm supporters are welcome to join the discussion on our Producers listserve- where local farmers swap know how- email kristina@mocoalliance.org with "join listserve" in the subject line to sign up.

MCA is proud to announce that we have been once again recognized as one of the best small charities in the D.C. region by Catalogue for Philanthropy: Greater Washington. A panel of 110 expert reviewers from area foundations, corporate giving programs, and peer non-profit organizations evaluated 270 applications.

MCA is known as an effective and innovative non-profit whose efforts to preserve and promote Montgomery County’s nationally recognized 93,000 acre Ag Reserve have brought increased public and governmental support of local food production and farmland and open space preservation. Most importantly, MCA’s efforts are putting more farmers on the ground and keeping them there.
